If you have a small to medium sized garden, an 18" - 21" cutting deck lawn mower is recommended to be able to comfortably cut your lawn. For a larger garden, a 21" cutting deck or bigger would be best suited.
The larger the cutting deck the quicker you will complete your grass cutting. In regards to choosing the drive transmission on your new lawnmower, it's important to recognize the slopes and terrain of your grass area. For smaller and flat lawns, a single-speed self-propelled mower is perfect. If your garden has slopes and different terrain, a variable drive (Hydrostatic) transmission will give you far more control when cutting between different areas.
